History of NAPCE

2001

October saw the organisation's ninth Annual Conference, held at Coventry; the theme for this year was "Managing Quality Education - The Answer is Within".
Practice Professional Development Plans - A Practical Framework was created by Dr. John Bibby.
October also saw the organisation change its name to "National Association of Primary Care Educators UK" to create a broader educational organisation for all educators within primary care.

2000

To celebrate NAGPT's coming of age, our millennium conference "Sharing Wisdom and Health" was planned to develop partnerships with colleagues in other healthcare organisations. The conference celebrated the importance of continuous learning and development as we expand our wisdom and become even healthier.
The following documents were created:
Vision 2000 - A Managed CPD in the new NHS by Dr. Malcolm Valentine.
Educators' Handbook

1999

January brought two major changes. Jane Whitworth joined as administrator. With her previous experience of IT and office management, Jane is the ideal person to "herd cats" and bring the NAGPT's 20 plus council members together. Her skills are needed to co-ordinate NAGPT's increasing activity.
The introduction of PCGs brings significant opportunities for NAGPT to support and develop the role of clinical governance. With this in mind the conference theme for 1st - 3rd October 1999 was "Developing Quality".
The first NAGPT newsletter was launched in January 1999.
The Professional Development of GP Tutors booklet was created in February 1999 by Dr. John Howard.

1998

In February 1998, the second strategic think-tank clarified Vision for NAGPT. Networking in the UK, together with other tasks such as the NAGPT handbook agreed.
The sixth NAGPT Conference, entitled "Taking Responsibility" was held at Bosworth Hall, 2nd - 4th October 1998. As the NAGPT has matured, the November think-tank allowed real delegation to take place for the first time, and the opportunity to operate on a wider stage.

1997

Our fifth conference, entitled "Time to Learn" took place at Bosworth Hall 10th - 12th October 1997.
Subscriptions increased to meet improved NAGPT infrastructure accepted at AGM.
First strategy think-tank.

1996

The fourth conference, entitled "Learning Together" took place at Bosworth Hall, 4th - 6th October.
Achieved CRAGPIE recognition (via Simon Smail as Chair).
GP Tutor training pack was introduced as joint initiative between West Midlands, RHA and NAGPT. This achieved recognition by the Department of Health of NAGPT's role.

1995

Joshna Patel was employed as part-time administrator, thus enabling more assertive action on recruitment and raising NAGPT profile.  NAGPT valued in medical politics and recognised nationally by the NHSE, RCGP and GMC (with Sir Donald Irvine's encouragement).
"Moving Ahead", the third conference at Market Bosworth took place on 13-15th October. NAGPT now handles booking; attendance over 100. NAGPT constitution agreed.

1994

The second Annual Conference was held at Stockport, 8th - 10th June.
Kumar Kotegaonkar's surgery is confirmed as the HQ for the NAGPT with his staff covering the workload. The RCGP helps with bookings for the conference; 70 people attend and a membership is established.

1993

The Inaugural Conference in Bromsgrove took place 22nd - 24th September; 90 people attended. The role of the NAGPT as a body for GP CME Tutors is established, with representatives from ACE, RCGP present. Kumar Kotegaonkar is recognised for his efforts and elected NAGPT chair.

1992

Agreement is reached to move ahead and form an organising Committee. Co-ordination was first via Kumar Kotegaonkar's Practice Manager - Barbara Birnie, with meetings resourced by West Midlands RCGP and Glaxo.

1991

Kumar Kotegaonkar discusses resourcing a UK group with Steve Gorton (Glaxo); agreement reached in principal.

1990

New GP Contract, Kumar Kotegaonkar (North West) perceives changes in the CME Tutor role and tests his ideas with the North West GP Tutors group. With support from this base, he writes to all UK GP Tutors in June 1990 to seek opinions regarding an organisation. Strong support received from Gill Plant (Mersey), Michael Taylor (North West), Alan McDonald and David Wall (Regional Advisor, West Midlands), Sam Sambandan (Anglia) and Geoff Roberts (RCGP).
